To meet this demand, the body that administrates the generic top-level extensions, ICANN, established the .MOBI extension in 2005. The first registrations were allowed in September 2006, and the idea behind this domain extension is that all websites that use it are required to comply with special terms. In other words, all .MOBI websites should be built to be opened faultlessly by mobile devices in agreement with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” drawn by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in collaboration with the dot MOBI Registry organization. These involve how a web page is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), and so on.

The restrictions have provoked some worries given that the top-level extension is the only one that specifies what devices ought to be able to open a website and the way in which this has to happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a web page should be built in such a way as to be accessed by the majority of Internet browsers and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
